Building on the success of last year's AppSec DC 2009, the AppSec DC team is proud to announce AppSec DC 2010!. AppSec DC will take place at the Walter E. **CALL FOR TRAINING SESSIONS**

IBWAS and OWASP is currently soliciting training proposals for the OWASP Ibero-American Web Applications Security 2010 Conference (IBWAS'10) which will take place at ISCTE-IUL, Lisboa, Portugal, on November 24 through November 26, 2010.

There will be training courses on November 24 followed by plenary sessions on the 25 and 26 with multiple tracks per day.


We are seeking training proposals on the following topics (in no particular order):

- Application Threat Modeling

- Business Risks with Application Security

- Hands-on Source Code Review

- Metrics for Application Security

- OWASP Tools and Projects

- Privacy Concerns with Applications and Data Storage

- Secure Coding Practices (J2EE/.NET)

- Starting and Managing Secure Development Lifecycle Programs

- Technology specific presentations on security such as AJAX, XML, etc

- Web Application Security countermeasures

- Web Application Security Testing

- Web Services, XML and Application Security

- Anything else relating to OWASP and Application Security


Proposals on topics not listed above but related to the conference (i.e. which are related to Application Security) may also be accepted.


There may be 1 or half a day courses. The proposals must respect the restrictions of the OWASP Speaker Agreement. The conference will reward trainers with at least 30% of the total revenue of their courses, based on a minimum attendance. Courses that attract more students may be granted higher percentages. No other compensation (such as tickets or lodging) will be provided. If you require a different arrangement, please contact the conference chair at the email address below.

**Compensation**
Instructors and authors will be paid based on the number of students in their training sessions. If the training gathers only the minimum number of students, the compensation will be 30% of the revenue. For each group of 10 extra students enrolled, the compensation will be increased by 5% of the revenue, up to a maximum of 45% of the training revenue. For example, a 1-day training with 10 to 19 students will generate a compensation of 30% of the revenue. For classes of 20 to 29 students, the compensation raises to 35% percent of the revenue.

 1-day training: 450 EUR per student
All prices in Euros (EUR)

**Minimum number of students**
 half-day trainings: 10 students

23 Advantages of Online Surveys - Survey Bounty

What is a great survey?

A great online survey provides you actionable, clear information for your business decisions. Great surveys have higher response rates, higher quality data and are easy to fill out.
Follow these 10 tips to create great surveys, improve the response rate of your survey, and the quality of the data you gather, by following these basic rules of good surveying.

1. Clearly define the purpose of your online survey

Fuzzy goals lead to fuzzy results and the last thing you want to end up with is a set of results that provide no real decision–enhancing value. Good surveys have focused objectives that are easily understood. Spend time up front to identify, in writing:
  • What is the goal of this survey?
  • Why are you creating this survey?
  • What do you hope to accomplish with this survey?
  • How will you use the data you are collecting?
  • What decisions do you hope to impact with the results of this survey? (This will later help you identify what data you need to collect in order to make these decisions.)
Sounds obvious, but we have seen plenty of surveys where a few minutes of planning could have made the difference between receiving quality responses (responses that are useful as inputs to decisions) or un–interpretable data.
Consider the case of the software firm that wanted to find out what new functionality was most important to customers. The survey asked ‘How can we improve our product?’ The resulting answers ranged from ‘Make it easier’ to ‘Add an update button on the recruiting page’. While interesting information, this data is not really helpful for the product manager who wanted to take an itemized list for the development team with customer input as a prioritization variable.
Spending time identifying the objective might have helped the survey creators determine:
  • Are we trying to understand our customers’ perception of our software in order to identify areas of improvement (e.g. hard to use, time consuming, unreliable)?
  • Are we trying to understand the value of specific enhancements? They would have been better off asking customers to please rank from 1 – 5 the importance of adding X new functionality.
Advance planning helps ensure that the survey asks the right questions to meet the objective and generate useful data.

2. Keep the survey short and focused

Short and focused helps with both quality and quantity of response. It is generally better to focus on a single objective than try to create a master survey that covers multiple objectives.
Shorter surveys generally have higher response rates and lower abandonment among survey respondents. It’s human nature to want things to be quick and easy – once a survey taker loses interest they simply abandon the task – leaving you to determine how to interpret that partial data set (or whether to use it all).
Make sure each of your questions is focused on helping to meet your stated objective. Don’t toss in ‘nice to have’ questions that don’t directly provide data to help you meet your objectives.
To be certain that the survey is short; time a few people taking the survey. Zoomerang research (along with Gallop and others) has shown that the survey should take 5 minutes or less to complete. 6 – 10 minutes is acceptable but we see significant abandonment rates occurring after 11 minutes.

3. Keep the questions simple

Make sure your questions get to the point and avoid the use of jargon. We on the Zoomerang team have often received surveys with questions along the lines of. “When was the last time you used our RGS?” (What’s RGS?) Don’t assume that your survey takers are as comfortable with your acronyms as you are.
Try to make your questions as specific and direct as possible. Compare: What has your experience been working with our HR team? To: How satisfied are you with the response time of our HR team?

4. Use closed ended questions whenever possible

Closed ended questions give respondents specific choices (e.g. Yes or No), making it easier to analyze results. Closed ended questions can take the form of yes/no, multiple choice or rating scale. Open–ended questions allow people to answer a question in their own words. Open–ended questions are great supplemental questions and may provide useful qualitative information and insights. However, for collating and analysis purposes, close–ended questions are preferable.

5. Keep rating scale questions consistent through the survey

Rating scales are a great way to measure and compare sets of variables. If you elect to use rating scales (e.g. from 1 – 5) keep it consistent throughout the survey. Use the same number of points on the scale and make sure meanings of high and low stay consistent throughout the survey. Also, use an odd number in your rating scale to make data analysis easier. Switching your rating scales around will confuse survey takers, which will lead to untrustworthy responses.

6. Logical ordering

Make sure your survey flows in a logical order. Begin with a brief introduction that motivates survey takers to complete the survey (e.g. “Help us improve our service to you. Please answer the following short survey.”). Next, it is a good idea to start from broader–based questions and then move to those narrower in scope. It is usually better to collect demographic data and ask any sensitive questions at the end (unless you are using this information to screen out survey participants). If you are asking for contact information, place that information last.

7. Pre–test your survey

Make sure you pre–test your survey with a few members of your target audience and/or co–workers to find glitches and unexpected question interpretations.

8. Consider your audience when sending survey invitations

Recent statistics show the highest open and click rates take place on Monday, Friday and Sunday. In addition, our research shows that the quality of survey responses does not vary from weekday to weekend. That being said, it is most important to consider your audience. For instance, for employee surveys, you should send during the business week and at a time that is suitable for your business. i.e. if you are a sales driven business avoid sending to employees at month end when they are trying to close business.

9. Consider sending several reminders

While not appropriate for all surveys, sending out reminders to those who haven’t previously responded can often provide a significant boost in response rates.

10. Consider offering an incentive

Depending upon the type of survey and survey audience, offering an incentive is usually very effective at improving response rates. People like the idea of getting something for their time. Zoomerang research has shown that incentives typically boost response rates by 50% on average.
One caveat is to keep the incentive appropriate in scope. Overly large incentives can lead to undesirable behavior, for example, people lying about demographics in order to not be screened out from the survey.

Preparing an Online Questionnaire - How to Conduct an Online Survey

So, you've decided to conduct an online survey. There are a few questions in your mind that you would like answered and you are on the lookout for a fast and inexpensive way to find out more about your customers, clients etc. The first and foremost thing you need to decide what the objectives of the study are. Ensure that you can phrase these objectives as questions or measurements. If you can't, you are better off looking at other means of gathering data like focus groups and other qualitative methods. Online Surveys tend to focus in on more on "Quantitative" data collection.
  1. Review the basic objectives of the study. What are you trying to discover? What actions do you want to take as a result of the survey?  This helps you double check the validity of the data collection mechanism. Online Surveys are just one way of collecting and quantifying perspectives.
  2. Visualize all of the relevant information items you would like to have. What will the output report look like? What charts and graphs will be prepared?  What information do you need to be assured that action is warranted?
  3. Rank each topic in items 1 and 2 according to the value of the topic. List the most important topics first.  Revisit items 1 and 2 again to make sure the objectives, topics and information you need are appropriate.  Remember, you can't solve the problem if you ask the wrong questions.
  4. How easy or difficult is it for the respondent to provide information on each topic? If it is difficult, is there another way to obtain the information by asking another question?

    This is probably the most important step. Online Surveys have to be Precise, Clear and Concise. Due to the nature of the "Web" and the fickleness associated, if your questions are too complicated and are not easy to understand, you will have a high "drop out" rate.
  5. Create a sequence for the topics that is unbiased. Make sure that the questions asked first do not bias the results of the next questions. Sometimes providing too much information, or disclosing purpose of the study can create bias.

    Once you have a sequence of topics, you can have a basic layout of a survey. It is always prudent to add an "Introductory" text to explain the project and what is required off the respondent. It is also professional to have an ending "Thank You" text as well as information about where to find the results of the survey, when they are published.
  6. Determine the type of question that is best suited to answer the question and provide enough robustness to meet analysis requirements. This means do you use open-ended text questions, dichotomous, multiple choice, rank order, scaled, or constant sum (ratio scale) questions. There is a fine line you need to walk here - Generally tougher analysis requirements will lead to more complicated questionnaire design. However there are a couple of tools available to make life easier: -

    1. Page Breaks - Avoid having a huge scrolling survey. Introduce page breaks as necessary. Please also refrain from just having one question per page. This increases the time to complete the survey as well as increases the chances for "drop outs".
    2. Branching - Use Branching and Skip Logic to make your surveys "Smart". Avoid using text like, "If you answered No to Q1 then Answer Q4" - this causes respondent frustration and increases the "drop out" rate. Design the survey using Branching Logic so that the correct questions are automatically routed based on previous responses.
  7. Write the questions.  You may need to write several questions for each topic, selecting the best one. You might also be better off dividing the survey into multiple sections.
  8. Sequence the questions so that they are unbiased.
  9. Repeat all of the steps above to find any major holes.  Are the questions really answered?  Have someone review it for you.
  10. Time the length of the survey.  A survey should take less than five minutes.  At three to four questions per minute, you are limited to about 15 questions. One open end text question counts for three multiple choice questions. Most online software tools will record the time taken for the respondents to answer questions.
  11. Pretest the survey to 20 or more people. Obtain their feedback... in detail. What were they unsure about?  Did they have questions? Did they have trouble understanding what you wanted? Did they take a point of view not covered in your answers or question?

    1. An easy way to do this is to create another survey, with a few "open ended" essay questions along with your main project. Let's call this the "feedback survey".
    2. Email the "Project" survey to your test group and then email the "feedback" survey also after that.
    3. In that way, you can have your test group send you comments regarding the functionality as well as usability of your "Project" survey by using you "feedback survey"!
  12. Revise your online questionnaire incorporating the feedback that you got.
  13. Send the Survey out to all your respondents!
Online surveys are a great alternative to expensive mail or telephone surveys. There are a few caveats to online surveys however that you must be aware of. If you are trying to survey a representative sample of the general population, please bear in mind that not everyone is online. Moreover, not everyone is receptive to online survey also. Our research has shown that the demographic that responds to online survey invitations is generally biased toward younger people.
